Why We Don’t Pierce Infants

At Master Pierce, we often receive questions about infant piercings. While some cultures and families view early piercings as tradition, we choose not to pierce infants. Our reasons are both ethical and physical, and they focus on the well-being of your child.

From an ethical perspective, an infant cannot provide informed or competent consent for a body modification. Piercing is a personal decision, and we believe that choice should belong to the child. If, years later, your child no longer wants pierced ears, the fistulas may already be too solid to close naturally. In addition, the procedure causes discomfort, and infants cannot mentally cope with pain in a healthy way.

On the physical side, a piercing is still a mildly invasive procedure. It produces pain at the moment and can leave residual soreness for several weeks. While older children understand that the pain is temporary, infants cannot. They also cannot follow aftercare instructions. For example, they may touch or pull on the jewelry, which increases the risk of infection. Moreover, they do not understand the importance of keeping a fresh wound clean.

As a result, we strongly recommend waiting until your child is ready. Once your child can clearly ask for a piercing and demonstrate basic understanding of hygiene and responsibility, it may be the right time. At that point, piercing becomes a personal choice rather than something imposed.
