The Navel (belly button) piercing is probably the most iconic body piercing. Everyone knows what it is and more people have it or has had it than any other piercing besides the ear. There are as many rumors of where it started as there are Navel piercings, but what we know for sure is the first time it was shown in popular culture. That honor goes to the 1993 Aerosmith video, “Cryin”, where real life piercer, Paul King, pierced Alicia Silverstone’s navel. That fake piercing started a real craze that is still felt today, 20 years later.
There are a few things that you should know when getting this piercing. First, the Navel piercing is one of the longest healing piercings. This is due to its placement in the body’s largest pivot point. Second, not all Navels can be pierced. “Outies” and other shaped belly buttons shouldn’t be pierced. Ask your piercer if your Navel is pierceable. Lastly, curved barbells heal quicker than ones pierced with captive rings or circular barbells.
To help ensure that your piercings heal without problems, always demand internally-threaded, implant grade steel or titanium. Research your local piercers and look at their portfolios for the best one.
